THE STORY:
On this pillow, bold white geometric embroidery forms a decorative pattern on hand woven olive green fabric along with a thin, white, line grid work weave from India, on the upper left. The group who produced this fabric is a fair trade women’s development organization called Sasha based in Calcutta, India. I have had the opportunity to visit Sasha several times. Their work is beautifully done Preserving traditional hand embroidery is of great importance to Sasha.
On the lower left, is a contemporary striped handwoven fabric from Guatemala in colors of ecru, gold, fushia and green, all with alternating stripes highlighted with black and white “jaspe.” Other stripe patterns have design elements using contrasting color threads.
Both of the more modern weavings on the left, compliment the more traditional pattern woven in the western Highlands of Guatemala. The complexity of the weaving woven in colors of gold, green, brown, black and red compliment the more contemporary fabrics on the right and work well to give this pillow uniqueness.
